Aschiana
Global EduSport cooperates with the locals in Afghanistan to create a better future for its children and youth. Since July 2004 with grants from DANIDA, Global EduSport has established a small education center at Main ASCHIANA – one of the six children’s centers in Kabul. The center will form a frame around education through sports with a temporary project period from July 2004 to January 2006.
Children in Aschiana
To the children attached to the centers the daily stay at ASCHIANA is a breathing space away from the work on the streets. It also keeps away the worst hunger, and the hopes to one day become part of the formal school and education system are kept alive.
The children come from the absolutely poorest families in Afghanistan. For that same reason, the families are often forced to live on the outskirts of Kabul, where they just barely can afford to live in barracks. It is therefore not unusual that the children work 1-1 1/2 hours to get to the inner city where they help their family survive by selling everything from water to illegally acquired relief deliveries or handicrafts made at the centers.
A survey conducted by an Australian psychologist at the centers in 2001 shows that 90% of the children have lost a near family member during the war and 50% of the children have lost one of their parents. This is why these children are often providing for a whole family.
